Watch Out For Kama Sutra Virus

February 2nd, 2006

Although it might sound like fun, the Kama Sutra virus is not one that you want to be infected with. The virus is supposed to hit Windows based computer around the world Friday. The virus is a mass mailing worm that; disables security-related (antivirus) programs, steals personal information, and deletes certain files types (*.doc,*.xls,*.mdb,*.mde,*.ppt,*.pps,*.zip,*.rar,*.pdf,*.psd,*.dmp) from your computer and network drives.

Fighting viruses and spyware has become quite the task nowadays. To try and minimize the risk of being infected you should install an antivirus and spyware detection program. You should keep them updated and run system scans often to detect infections before they become worse.

Tonight might be a good time to:
1- Install an antivirus client if you don’t have one (AVG is free)
2- Update your virus definitions and schedule scans
3- Install a spyware detection program (Ad-Aware is free)
4- Update your spyware definitions and scan your system
5- Backup important data from your computer; unplug USB drives
6- Avoid opening suspicious e-mails
7- Make sure your computer is behind a firewall
8- Not open any links through your instant messaging program (MSN, AIM, Yahoo…)
9- Change (or create) your Windows password to include special characters and numbers
10- Buy a Mac, since they aren’t affected
