January 26th, 2008

I think the reason why I am so low is because the iPhone is not available to Canada…..yet.

Macworld starts Tuesday

January 9th, 2008

Well the much anticipated Macworld is set to start on Tuesday. I’ve been reading tons of stuff online regarding what Apple is supposed to be releasing this year and one thing that keeps coming up is iTunes movie rentals. Rumours say that movie rentals will be $3.99 from the iTunes store and will expire after 24 hours. That’s not too bad, it’s cheaper than the movie store and no surprises since the movie is always in stock.

Another rumour that has been flying around is the announcement of a sub-compact Macbook Pro. Many sites are saying that we will see a 12″ Macbook Pro with a solid state hard drive early this year, possible at Macworld.

For the mobile user that doesn’t want to fork out additional cash for an iMac at home there are rumours that Apple will be releasing a docking station similar to the iMac where you simply slide your laptop computer into it.

I can’t wait to see what Steve Jobs comes up with this year. Hopefully it’s available to Canada this year… unlike the iPhone.

Remote Control Tiger or Leopard with VNC

November 7th, 2007

How do you connect to your Mac remotely??? Well there is an easy solution. The best part, it works with both Tiger and Leopard. You can VNC to your Mac from any computer by doing the following.

From any computer…

Download your favorite VNC viewer such as UltraVNC or TightVNC. You don’t need to install everything, all we need is the viewer.

In your router…

Make sure that port 5900 is open and being forwarded to your Mac’s IP address. To do so all you need to do is login to your router and look for the port forwarding section. If you don’t know what your IP address is you should be able to find it in your router as well under the status or DHCP section.
Note: If you are using a D-link the default address is http://192.168.0.1 the username is admin and the password is blank. If you’re using a Linksys the default address is http://192.168.1.1 the username is blank and the password is admin. If you are using a different type of router click here for the default password list.

On your Mac….

Open “System Preferences
Click on “Sharing
Select “Apple Remote Desktop” in Tiger or “Screen Sharing” in Leopard
VNC Sharing for Tiger
Click on “Access Privileges…” in Tiger or “Computer Options” in Leopard
Select whatever rights you want
Select “VNC viewers may control my screen with password” and enter a password
VNC for Tiger
Click OK and close the “Sharing” window.

To connect…

Open your VNC viewer and enter your home IP address. If you don’t know your IP address you can find it here.

To make connecting easier…

Most internet service providers don’t assign static IP addresses. This means that your IP address changes. To make your life easier sign up for a DDNS (Dynamic DNS) account from DynDNS.org, No-IP.com, ChangeIP.com, etc. This allows you to create an address, like mymac.dyndns.com, that maps to your home IP. You can configure DDNS accounts in most routers so when your IP address changes it updates the record at the DDNS provider automatically.

Voila! Enjoy!!

Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard comes out on Oct. 26th

October 19th, 2007

Leopard

For those of us that have a fairly new Mac computer it probably feels like Christmas is coming. I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited for a new OS. Mind you I have always used a PC up until May of this year when I bought Jenn bought our Macbook.

In the Windows world, when a new OS comes out it’s a very scary thing. Myself, an IT guy, this is the kinda stuff that I do all day. Fix PC’s, install updates, clean spyware / viruses, and basically everything else that goes with it. When an new OS comes out there are usually a lot of bugs that tend to cause problems. Another huge issues is hardware and software compatibility. I usually wait a year before converting all my managed systems to the latest Windows OS. Actually, we just started ordering new systems with Vista at the office and we’ve had challenges with it.

With Mac OS X Leopard I am not worried about the upgrade and will definitely be ordering and install it as soon as it comes out on the 26th.

Most of the new features are outlined in this guided tour. I watched it about 30 minutes ago and am looking forward to have it installed on our Macbook.

Here are some of the best new features from the new Mac OS X Leopard…

  • Time Machine - go back to any file that was on your mac
  • Stacks - easier access to items on your dock
  • Quick Look - view the content of the file without opening it
  • Cover Flow - easily flip through your files with a live preview
  • Spaces - organize your open windows
  • iChat - ability to share your desktop, photo booth effects, record audio and voice chats
  • Mail - RSS built in, to-do, notes, templates, data detected - recognizes addresses and phone numbers
  • Boot Camp - for those of us that still need Windows
  • Safari - the fastest web browser today
  • Parental Control - content filtering, logging, set up time limits and bedtimes

If you haven’t already converted to a Mac, now is the time to ditch that PC!
